How to make a wormery video

You will need:
-
A large plastic box with airholes
- Shredded newspaper
- Clean sand
- Good quality rotted garden compost
- Wormery worms
- Organic kitchen waste
At its most basic, a wormery is a box into which you layer scraps of organic kitchen waste, sand and worms purchased specifically for the purpose (usually tiger worms, red worms or brandlings). The worms process the waste into some of the best concentrated plant food your garden could have. A wormery is a great way to use up organic kitchen waste and create an environmentally safe fertilizer to boost the growth of your plants and vegetables.
Time to complete job: Approx half an hour
Approximate budget: About £25 for 500 worms plus the cost of the box/wormery.
Tip: You can buy worms for your wormery from online suppliers like West Country Worms.

Step 1: Line the box
Line the bottom of the box with shredded newspaper and then dampen it down slightly. Follow this with a layer of sand.
-

Step 2: Add the bedding layer
The bedding layer is where the worms will spend most of their time, so you need to make sure it\'s made of organic matter that's rich and fertile. Spread the first layer with a layer of good quality rotted garden compost (you could also use composted farmyard manure for this layer).
-

Step 3: Add the worms
Spread the worms out over the surface of the compost, and then cover them over with another layer of garden compost - worms are very light sensitive!
-

Step 4: Add the kitchen waste layer
Add a layer of organic kitchen waste. Any vegetable waste like peelings, skins or other scraps will do. Avoid fatty products like cheeses, meats or leftovers food as this might attract vermin. Cover the vegetable layer over with another layer of garden compost. Dampen the layers with a light covering of water. Replace the lid and place somewhere cool.
-

Step 5: Looking after your wormery
Keep topping up the box with kitchen waste as it becomes available. When the box is full and all the organic matter has been digested, you can empty the worms out and use the raw compost in the garden.
