Pictures and paintings really finish off a room but it can be tricky to hang them exactly where you want them. Our step-by-step video guide to hanging pictures will help you get it right.
Tip: Grouping artworks or framed photos is a great way to create a feature wall. Plan the positioning of all the pictures before you start and create interest by using frames that are different sizes and shapes, but compliment one another.
-

Step 1: Plan your placement
Make a newspaper template of your picture by drawing around it onto a piece of newspaper and then cutting it out. Blu tack it onto the wall, moving it around until you're happy with its position.
Try to find a position that will balance your room and show off your picture to its best advantage. Hanging the centre of the picture at 5ft 2 inches means that it will be at eye-line height for most people. -

Step 2: Measure up
If your picture has a wire behind it, pull the wire upwards and then measure from the top of the top of the arc to the edge of the frame. Mark this distance on the paper template, measuring down from the middle of the top edge.
-

Step 3: Position your newspaper template
With the marked side outwards, lightly Blu-tac your template to the wall where you want your picture to hang. Make a small hole through the paper on the marked spot and draw through onto the wall, marking out the position of where the nail or screw will need to be.
Tip:If you want to hang a heavy picture from drywall, make sure you centre it along a wall stud to prevent it pulling the drywall apart. -

Step 4: Positioning the nail or screw
Before you start drilling or hammering, make sure that no pipes or cables that lie under the plaster as these can pose a hazard. Hammer the nail or drill the hole for the screw in the marked position. If you're using a screw, don't forget to place the wall plug into the hole before inserting the screw.
Tip: A small piece of tape stuck over the spot where the nail will go will prevent the plaster cracking as you hammer it in. -

Step 5: Finishing
Remove the paper template and hang your picture.
