YOU WILL NEED:
-
Old standard lamp (or other junk shop find)
- Flattened cardboard box or protective sheet
- Small cutting knife
- Sandpaper
- Sugar soap
- Sponge
- Lint-free cloth
- White spirit
- Overalls, goggles and face mask
- Electric paint sprayer (you could rent this)
- Extension lead
- Oil-based paint
This simple technique can transform an old standard lamp into something much more playful. Best of all, it doesn't require much effort to make.
Time to complete job: About 2 hours plus drying time.
Approximate budget: £50 excluding cost of lamp.
-

Step 1: Prepare the lamp
Find an outdoor location and cover the immediate area with a flattened cardboard box or a protective sheet. Strip any unwanted material from the lampshade (or other object) using a small cutting knife.
Lightly sand any painted or varnished areas, clean with sugar soap, then wipe down with a cloth dampened with white spirit. -

Step 2: Load up the sprayer
Load the paint sprayer with paint, following the manufacturer’s instructions as to the amount of paint required and how much it should be diluted.
-

Step 3: Spray away
Hold the spray gun perpendicular to the surface of the object (holding it at an angle deposits paint unevenly) and move the paint sprayer over the surface at a steady rate. (Practice on some card beforehand if you feel unsure.) Keep a fair distance away for an even coat – you can always move closer later to fill in gaps.
At least two coats are needed for an even finish, but make sure you leave the recommended time for drying between applications. -
