How to create an oriental sideboard
You will need:

Black acrylic emulsion
- Red acrylic eggshell
- Stencils (we used a Chrysanthemum shape)
- Metallic finish
- Paint brush
- Stencil brush
- Spray mount
Get a taste of the Far East in your home by decorating plain furniture with oversized stencil designs. Opt for a palette of black and red, and highlight with metallic shapes.
Time to complete job: Eight hours (excluding drying time)
Approximate budget: Around £150, excluding the cost of the sideboard

Step 1: Remove fittings
Remove the handles and any fittings. If there is any flaking paint or rough wood on the cabinet, sand down until smooth before painting over.

Step 2: Paint the inside
Paint the inside of your cabinet using the red paint and leave to dry. Apply a second coat for a neat, even coverage.

Step 3: Paint the outside
Paint the outside of the cabinet in the black paint and leave to dry. Apply two to three coats for an even finish.

Step 4: Position the stencils
Take the stencil and position the patterns. Spray a thin layer of spray mount on the back of the stencil, then place it onto the cabinet, pushing down firmly so that it sticks in position. Using a stencil brush dipped in metallic Rub 'n' Buff, lightly stencil over the patterns with a circular motion, working into all the cut-away areas. Remove the stencil carefully and reposition to repeat.

Step 5: Buff and finish
Leave to dry for two hours, then lightly buff up the gold using a clean dry cloth. Replace handles.
