You will need:
-
Base colour acrylic emulsion (we used an ultramarine colour)
- Silver leaf sheets
- Metal size (special adhesive for metal leaf)
- Decorative mouldings
- Water-based gloss varnish
- Paintbrushes
- Masking tape
- Wood glue
Transform an old junk store find or new budget purchase by adding decorative mouldings and a bit of sparkle. This metallic mirror will add a bit of glamour to a plain dressing table - and would look great in gold too!
Time to complete job: Three hours (excluding drying time)
Approximate budget: Around £30, excluding the cost of the mirror
-

Step 1: Clean your mirror
If you've used an old mirror, give the frame a good clean to make sure it's free from any grease or flaking paint. We used a brand new mirror from a budget range.
-

Step 2: Paint the base coat
Mask off the mirror to protect it from paint, then apply a base coat to the frame and mirror stand. Paint two coats, but leave to dry thoroughly between coats.
-

Step 3: Add the mouldings
Paint the mouldings like the mirror, then stick them to the top and bottom of the mirror and the stand with the wood glue. Leave to dry.
-

Step 4: Add the glue
Apply a thin coat of size to the areas you wish to cover with silver leaf and leave until tacky (about 15 minutes).
-

Step 5: Apply the silver leaf and finish
Lay the sheets of silver leaf carefully onto the surface and tamp down with a soft brush. Allow to dry for two to three hours. With the same brush, use soft circular movements to remove any overhanging pieces.
Use a fine grade sandpaper to slightly distress the surface of the silver leaf to give it a burnished finish and allow a hint of paint to show through.
Apply a coat of gloss varnish to protect the finish against any moisture and oxidation. -
