Decorating video: Modern oriental living room

For a new twist on oriental style, choose bold contrasts of colour, simple graphic patterns and a mix of modern accessories and eastern-inspired pieces. Styled and presented by Robin Collingwood.

Step 1: Walls
Start with the walls, but be careful with dark colours – this deep blue is warmer than classic navy so it's a perfect shade for a cosy living room scheme.

Step 2: Floors
Grey carpet is a practical alternative to a light, neutral shade, and coordinates with the blues in the scheme. Mark out the seating area with a graphic rug.

Step 3: Windows
For a contemporary look, simple window treatments are best. A wide Roman blind is an ideal way to show off a large fabric pattern.

Step 4: Furniture
Make a real statement with a bright, upholstered armchair. This yellow striped fabric warms up the scheme and contrasts with the dark wood furniture.

Step 5: Accessories
Tie the scheme together and mix and match old with new. Try using two or more of the same item for maximum impact.
