You will need:
-
Square cushion pad (the desired size)
- Cushion fabric
- Matching thread
- Pins
- Scissors
- Zipper (if desired, 2" shorter than the width of the cushion pad)
Time to complete the job: Less than one hour.
Approximate budget: £15 or less, depending on the fabric used and the size of the cushion.
Tip: Liven up this pattern with velvet ribbon, buttons or a colourful fringe. Simply attach to the fabric before sewing together.
-

Step 1: Cutting out & sewing
Measure your cushion pad. Add on a seam allowance of 5/8" on all sides.
Cut out two identical pieces from your fabric to the desired size (including seam allowances) – these will form the front and back of your cushion. With the right sides of the fabric together and raw edges even, pin on three sides.
Stitch a 5/8" seam around the three sides and four corners. Trim the seams close to the stitching and press open. -

Step 2: Finishing
Turn the cover right side out. On the final open edge, turn the edges under following the seam line and press.
Insert the cushion pad. Slipstitch the cover closed across the opening. -

Step 3: Adding a zipper
Instead of sewing the final edge close, it\'s easy to add a zipper for quick removal of the cushion pad to wash the cover.
Measure and cut out your fabric to the desired size (as above), including seam allowances. Place the two pieces right sides together and tack right across the top edge.
Stitch 1.5" in from each side edge. Press the seam open. -

Step 4: Finishing
Place and pin the zipper right side down over the tacked area of the seam.
With the zipper foot attachment on your machine, first tack, then stitch, along each side of the zipper close to the zipper teeth.
Turn over to the right side of the fabric, carefully unpick the tacking stitches along the seam over the zip and open the zip.
With right sides of the fabric together, pin the remaining raw edges together, tack then stitch around the remaining three sides.
Turn right side out through the zipper. Insert the cushion pad and close.
