How to erect a trellis video

Got busybody neighbours peeking over your five-foot fence? Or maybe you want to try growing a vine? Erecting a garden trellis to increase the height of your fence is an easy garden DIY task.

You will need:

Large sheet of trellis
1.5in screws
Hand saw
Tape measure
Screw gun
Pencil

The easiest way to a touch more privacy is to hang a piece of trellis that extends the height of your fence. You don't need to fiddle with new fence posts either. This step-by-step will help your garden become the secluded paradise you always knew it could be.

Time to complete the job: 1 hour

Step 1: Measure up

Take the measurement of the space between the two fence posts.
Transfer the measurement to your piece of trellis.
Using the hand saw, cut the trellis down to the correct width.
Tip: When working with trellis, be careful not to joggle it about too much. It will start to pull apart if you're too rough with it.
Step 2: Place the trellis

Put the cut piece of trellis in place against the fence.
If you have a concrete plinth at the base of your fence, rest the trellis on the plinth. If your fence goes straight down to the ground, hang the trellis a few inches off the ground to prevent rot.
Step 3: Secure it

Using screws and the screw gun, secure the trellis to the fence.
Make sure you set the screws into the fence's vertical support posts, rather than the thin horizontal slats.
Use four or five screws in each slat of trellis, until it is secure.
Plant a climbing plant at the base of the trellis. It will happily climb the fence, giving you more privacy the more it grows.
