If your old pendant light fixtures are worn or have been installed carelessly, they could be a serious fire hazard. If they're yellow, stained with age or splashed with old paint, they could be a serious threat to your stylish sensibility. Replace those eyesores with brand new fixtures in a few easy steps. Once the job's done, you'll have a great excuse to go out and get yourself a whole new set of lampshades!
Time to complete the job: half an hour

Step 1: Switch off for safety
Before you do work on any electrical wires, make sure the electricity is off. First turn off the wall switch. Then switch off the proper fuse on your fuse board.
-

Step 2: Assess the old lampholder
Check the threads where the bulb hangs for signs of wear. See if there are any exposed wires along the pendant cable. Unscrew the ceiling plate to look for any exposed wires.
Tip: If the ceiling plate has been painted over, tap it sharply with the end of a screwdriver a few times. This should crack the paint and allow the plate to be loosened. -

Step 3: Connect the new lampholder
Screw the new ceiling plate into place with some wood screws.
Connect the wires, starting with the earth wire. The earth should have green and yellow sleeving. It needs to be connected to the brass lug at the back of the ceiling plate.
Screw the black (neutral) wire into the same terminal as the blue wire. Then attach the red (live) wire into the terminal with the brown wire.
Fix the plastic cover over the ceiling plate.
Finally, connect a new lampshade and an energy-saving bulb!
Tip: Make sure to use a terminal screwdriver with the right size flat head to connect wires. Using a larger screwdriver could crack the ceiling plate.
