How to fit a door lock

You will need:
-
Drill
- Cylinder rim lock
- Chisel
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Mallet
- Screwdriver
- Drill bit set
- Flat bit
- Ruler
- Junior hacksaw
- Masking tape
Time to complete job: A morning - but leave plenty of time so the door isn't left unsecured overnight.
Approximate budget: Good quality cylinder rim locks cost from about £25.
First steps
Always buy a cylinder rim lock that can be deadlocked and is marked BS3621. This means it has been tested to simulate 30 years use and has passed anti-picking and forcing tests.

Step 1: Mark the position
Tape the paper template provided to the door and mark the lock body and screw hole positions.
-

Step 2: Drilling the hole for the lock
You will need a wide flat bit (normally 32mm or 1.25in) to drill the hole for the lock.
Secure the door in a portable workbench and set your drill on a fast speed to reduce splintering. When the point of the drill bit protrudes through the other side of the door, stop and finish the hole from the other side to stop the wood splintering.
Tip: Check the cylinder fits the hole. You may need to sand and file the edges of the hole for a good fit. -

Step 3: Fitting the lock together
Use a narrow drill bit to make starter holes for the screw fixings.
Fit the mounting plate to the inside of the door. Pass the cylinder through the door from the outside to find the length of the measuring bar against the manufacturer's instructions. Trim the bar to the correct length with a small hacksaw.
Tip: To make the lock body fit neatly onto the door, hold the casing in place and draw around the plate that wraps around the edge of the door. Cut a recess with a chisel and mallet to house the lock edge. -

Step 4: Finishing
Fit the lock together on the back of the door. Check the key works smoothly. If not, you may need to slightly enlarge the cylinder hole.
To fit the staple onto the door frame, close the door and mark the position of the bolt on the door frame. Cut out a recess with the chisel and screw the staple to the frame. Test the lock closes and locks securely.
Tip: Make sure all the frame woodwork is in good condition. If the frame can be rocked when you push it, either add extra wall fixings or have the frame replaced or repaired.
