Hello there,am not an expert either but the first thing is that what type of change you wish,it can be enormous or simple.
Maybe if you firstly change the colour of the room,it would give your furniture more value,I was thinking about a pale blue. And maybe you could either change your curtains,using blue,beige and brown or you could add a blue curtain in the middle of the ones already there.Beige,brown and blue cushions for your sofa with a touch of gold if you like(beads,ribbons...)
Maybe you could also remove the cover and all the things from the fireplace and put coloured marbles in the flower vases and add another big transparent vase or a huge clock and remove the one hanging.
I love the mirror at the right hand side of the picture,you could remove the ribbon and draw two curved lines on each side(one beige and one brown to match the colour scheme).
Maybe you could have shelves instead of that t.v table(you would have a large space to store many things and you might display you cute little vases, statues ...)
A brown and blue/ beige central mat for you table.
