Buying in Cornwall

Buyer's tips

  • To beat the rush for the best properties, check websites, chat to locals and get the inside gossip on what's due onto the market.
  • Visit the property in and out of season when it's quieter.
  • Think about parking – small fishing villages don't have a lot of room for cars.

The buyers: Paul and Karen
Karen is a management training consultant and Paul is a partner in an investment management business. They've travelled the world together and now live in East Sussex with their three children Verity (6), Gabriela (8) and Dominic (11).

After numerous family holidays, they've fallen in love with Cornwall. They're looking for a second home on the south coast, ideally in one of the little fishing villages.

Why Cornwall?
As well as its ancient fishing villages, rambling country walks, dramatic coastlines and beautiful beaches, Cornwall has a fascinating history that includes stone circles, castles, tin, cold and copper mines, pirates, smugglers and a host of intriguing myths and legends, including that of King Arthur. It appeals to surfers, artists, eco-warriors and those who just need a bit of rest and relaxation and a great holiday.

It's also considered the windiest county in England. Black Rock beach in Marazion is known locally as one of the best for wind sports - kite flying included – and what better way to blow away the cobwebs!

Taking to the water is another way to have fun in the wind. The Helford estuary is one of Cornwall's favourite sailing destinations and you can book a lesson in St Anthony's just off the main river. The estuary also boasts some of Cornwall's most sought after properties.

There are miles of coastal walks to take in the scenery or hire a classic car and get out and about in style. There are over 2,000 miles of winding lanes and unclassified roads and the section between St Ives and St Just offers uninterrupted views of the sea and coastline.
