Top window dressing tips

  • A bold pattern can dwarf a small window but make a grand statement on large windows.
  • Take a fabric sample home before buying.
  • If you prefer lightweight curtains, sew weighting into the lining of the hem to make them hang better.
  • Moving house? If your new windows are the wrong size for your old curtains, add coordinating fabric panels to the sides or bottom to add width or length.

If possible, measure your windows once you have put up your curtain pole or track. This should be attached about 5-12cm above the window frame, with the ends projecting around 10-15cm beyond each side.

Draw up a diagram of your window on paper and make a note of the following dimentions:

  • the width of the window frame
  • the distance from the track or pole to sill and also to the floor
  • the top of the window to the sill and to the floor
  • the width of the wall space on either side of the window, where the curtains will be pulled back to when not in use.

Take all your measurements to your fabric retailer and they should help you calculate the amount of fabric you will need. Depending on the heading style, this will be at least one and a half times your width.
