How to make Roman blinds video

Fabric

- Velcro
- A hacksaw
- A pencil
- Cord
- Plastic rings
- Eyelet screws
- Rods (plastic or wooden)
- Top and bottom batons
Roman blinds are simple, attractive and functional window dressings that have stood the test of time in terms of style. Making your own Roman blinds can be both a money-saving and rewarding experience.

Prepare the fabric
You need a single layer of fabric that is the same size as the window you wish to dress, plus an extra 10cm (4in) on the width. This extra material will be used to make a seam on each side of your blind.
Lay the fabric out on a work surface and make a fold of 2.5cm (1in) on the right hand side. Iron over the fold so that it forms a crease. Then, fold over a further 2.5cm and press this down as well.
Machine stitch the seam into place and repeat on the other side. You should now have nice neat edges to your blind. -
Mark out the casings
Next you need to create the casings, which will hold your plastic or wooden rods. Start by deciding how long you want the folds on your blinds to be. A good standard length is 25cm (10in).
Starting at the top of your material, leave 5cm (2in) for the top baton. Measure a further 25cm down and this is where your first casing will start. Draw a straight pencil line along the width of your fabric at this point. Draw another line 2.5cm further down and one more 2.5cm below that. -
Make the casings
Make a fold along the centre of your three lines and sew the top and bottom lines together with the sewing machine. Measure another 25cm down your fabric and repeat.
Continue to do this all the way down the material but you must leave 2.5cm at the bottom for the bottom baton. -
Create the top of the blind
Make a fold of about 1cm (0.4 in) at the top of your fabric and attach the furry part of your Velcro. The other side of the Velcro will be attached to the top baton, which will go at the top of the window.

Add the batons
Take your hacksaw and carefully trim your rods so that they are slightly shorter than the width of your blind.
Slot a baton into each of the casings that you made earlier and secure into place with a couple of hand stitches on either side. -
Attach the plastic rings and screw
Then you need to sew on the plastic rings. These rings will hold the threads which will make the blind work. You should attach two rings to each casing about 12cm (5in) in from each edge. Hand-sew these into place.
Screw one eyelet screw into the centre of your top baton. -
Thread the cord
Starting at the bottom of your blind, thread one end of your cord through each ring on the left hand side. When you reach the top, thread the cord through the eyelet screw on the top baton and let the excess cord hang down the right hand side of your blind.
Thread the other end of the cord up through the rings on the right hand side. Both ends of the cord will then join up to form the blind string.
Pull on the string and you'll see your Roman blind in full action.
