Where lighting is concerned, the more the better. This doesn't mean having a room that is over-bright, but one where light comes from many different sources, creating layers of overlapping pools. This gives a space both atmosphere and character. Equip yourself with an array of lamps, light fittings and pendant shades.

For a bit of romance, turn down the dimmers and switch off any lights that are too bright, just leaving soft pools of glowing in corners. Candle light is a brilliant way to relax and de-stress after a long day, especially if the candles are scented. You can arrange candles in groups anywhere around a room. Stack a set of large white church candles in an empty fireplace for an instant glow, or place tiny tea lights in ornamental glass jars.
