Q: How do I install and maintain artificial grass?

I've got a full concrete yard (no slabs), which has a slightly uneven surface, and I would like to install artificial grass. I've got a couple of questions before I begin. How will the artificial grass affect the yard when it rains? Can I install the artificial grass directly onto the concrete? Will my artificial grass need maintenance?

A: There are a number of different types of artificial grass and some can be fitted directly onto concrete – but always check with the company you’re purchasing from before laying. It should be fine in the rain as long as the yard already has adequate drains and the fall on the concrete runs towards those drains. If your yard has a tendency to become waterlogged, sort out the drainage properly before laying the artificial grass.  And, yes – you will need to clean it – get yourself a grass rake. Weeds can still grow in fake grass and you’ll still get bird droppings etc. You should find our article, Beginner’s guide to artificial grass useful - and a quick online search will reveal lots of retailers who can offer more advice on their specific ranges.
