Q: How do I put up shelves?

I'd like to put up some shelves, but I'm a complete DIY novice. Can you give me some advice on where to start please?

A: Firstly, you need to decide which types of shelves you’d like as there are various options - have you considered floating shelves, bracket shelving or recessed shelves? You should visit our shelving section, for some ideas and step-by-step guides to building each variation. Remember, putting up shelves - whatever size or shape - is more or less the same principle. It’s about fitting the brackets correctly to the wall that will hold the shelf level and secure. The key to fixing all brackets firmly to a wall is about using the right drill, drill bits, wall plugs and screws or fixings, if you get all of these correct you will have no problem fixing any shelf brackets to the wall, this also applies when fitting picture frames, mirrors, skirting boards etc.
