What's On: April

Sometimes, history is about the stories behind the stories. We've all heard of James Bond but what about Ian Fleming, the former intelligence officer and journalist who created 007? What made him tick? Find out at the Imperial War Museum this month, in an exciting new exhibition, For Your Eyes Only.

Also in April, there's still time to catch the National Museum of Scotland's stunning collection of silverware. Or you can celebrate William Shakespeare's birthday in Stratford-upon-Avon, where he was born. Plus, there are living history experiences from the Iron Age, medieval times, the Tudors and the English Civil War to keep the whole family amused over the school holidays.

Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, was every bit as interesting as his fictional hero. In For Your Eyes Only, the Imperial War Museum places Fleming and Bond in a historical context. How much of the 007 myth was based on Fleming's own experiences as an intelligence officer and journalist? Exhibits include annotated manuscripts and film props such as Daniel Craig's "blood-soaked" shirt. (Images © Imperial War Museum)
