Hallsands, Devon
The south Devon coastline is uniquely beautiful but it's wild, too. On January 26, 1917, the tiny fishing hamlet of Hallsands was washed out to sea during a fierce storm. The 128 inhabitants had to scramble up the cliffs to safety as huge waves swept 29 houses out to sea. Human activity destroyed Hallsands. Years of intensive dredging had robbed the village of its natural defences. When is it on?

- Coast: Top Ten coastal spots in the UK
The BBC Horizon team did a one-off programme in the eighties called 'The Shape of Britain' which involved flying around the coast of Britain whilst local experts acted as guides to tell you what you were seeing. I personally think that this formula worked far more successfully that the one used by Nicholas Crane in Coast, because every time I get drawn into his programme one of his assistants pops-up for ten minutes to tell us all about a nearby town. - Something to say?
