Live Aid
On July 13th 1985, Live Aid, the biggest rock event ever to be staged over a one-day period, was held to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The event was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure as a follow-up to the Band Aid single Do They Know It's Christmas? released the previous year. Held at Wembley Stadium in England and JFK Stadium in the US, it was billed as the Global Jukebox and included acts by U2, Queen, The Who, Bob Dylan and Madonna.
An estimated £150 million was raised as a direct result of the concert. It has been claimed that 95% of the world's TV sets tuned into at least part of the concert. Bob Geldof, seen here performing at the Wembley concert, received an honorary knighthood in 1986.
