In This Month: March Charlie Chaplin is Knighted
On the 4th March, 1975 comic genius and silent film legend Charlie Chaplin was finally knighted, after being denied a knighthood for many years because of disapproval over his two marriages to 16-year-old girls, a 'lurid' paternity suit and his supposed communist sympathies. Chaplin was eventually given the knighthood during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Chaplin, who was born in Walworth, London in 1889, was one of the most famous actors, directors and musicians of the early Hollywood cinema era. With a career that spanned more than 65 years, he is widely considered to be one of the best mime artists to have lived. This photo is a promotional portrait for his 1915 film The Tramp.
