We all love a good ghost story and Britain has spooks of all shapes and sizes to delight and terrify us. We chat to Philip Hutchinson of the Ghost Club to find out more about the spooky tales attached to hundreds of historic castles, palaces, houses and churches all contain elements of genuine history, no matter how far-fetched the legends might be. How much you believe is up to you!

Many thanks to Crathes Castle and Bamburgh Castle for assistance during the filming of this video feature.

Ghost Central
Tutbury Castle, in Staffordshire, dates back to the 1070s. King John, Richard II, Henry IV and James I all visited Tutbury. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned there. Today, the partially ruined castle is home to several ghostly legends. The most famous is Mary herself, who has appeared a number of times in recent years, dressed in both white and black garments. "The Keeper" roams the castle in a full suit of armour, while "The Frenchman" is dressed in filthy clothes and whispers in his native language to female visitors. Tutbury Castle lays on ghost hunts and sleepovers so if you fancy yourself as a paranormal investigator, you can test your mettle in the dead of night!

Bloody History
The Tower of London surely has the bloodiest history of all the buildings in Britain. For centuries, it was a place of incarceration and execution. If you were unlucky enough to be locked up in the Tower, you faced a very bleak future indeed. Numerous famous ghosts are said to haunt the Tower, including those of Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, and Lady Jane Grey. Anonymous spirits - perhaps those of lesser social standing - are also reputed to stalk the corridors and battlements.
