History has come a long way since the days of dusty classrooms and stuffy stately homes. Heritage venues are increasingly using skilled re-enactors to bring history to life. There's no better way to understand what went on in the past than by seeing it acted out in front of you by actors who have immersed themselves in their roles.

Many thanks to the following for assistance during the filming of this video feature: Edinburgh Castle, Malcolm Russell, Ellis Pike, Pru Porretta, Ardudwy Knights, Jeremy Richardson and Mark Wallis.

Pick Your Period
Whatever era of British history takes your fancy, the chances are that, somewhere out there, is a re-enactment or living history experience to cover it. In this article, we've just picked a selection to get you going, but there's a huge variety of events to enjoy. It's worth spending time online to find out what's on near you.

Romans
Verulanium Museum at St Albans in Hertfordshire stages monthly weekends when visitors can get to know members of the Roman XIIII Legion. Fishbourne Roman Palace in Sussex also hosts regular living history events, including gory re-enactments of gladiatorial combat.

Invaders
Viking re-enactments are popular all over the country. Corfe Castle in Dorset, Tatton Park in Cheshire and Battle Abbey, Hastings, all host Viking living history experiences. The Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon burial site in Suffolk regularly hosts Saxon-themed events exploring the lives of warriors and craftspeople.
