If you've got it, flaunt it, they say, and Britain's historic sites are no shrinking violets when it comes to film and television appearances. From Hollywood blockbusters to home-grown classics, a bit of period eye-candy rarely goes amiss. Michael Clewley of Visit Britain and location expert Sarah Eastel Locations take us behind the scenes.

On the Up
Tourism is big business for Britain, so anything that attracts tourists is good news. Visit Britain estimates that 40% of potential visitors to this country are influenced by portrayals of Britain in films and television programmes. If that's the case, then the future looks bright for British tourism, because our historic sites are busier than they've ever been with film and television work. Getting it Right When Hollywood producers plan a blockbuster costume drama, only the best is good enough. For the 2005 production of Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, the filmmakers chose Chatsworth House in Derbyshire as the location for Pemberley, Mr Darcy's huge ancestral pile. This was no coincidence. Many Jane Austen scholars believe that she used Chatsworth as a model for Pemberley. Some also suggest that she worked on the novel while staying in Derbyshire. Anyway, one look at the place is enough to set your bosom heaving, so Chatsworth got the job. |
