Robin Hood
Prince John
Although known as Prince John in all the tales of Robin Hood, the man who is always portrayed as trying to usurp King Richard's kingdom would never have been referred to as "Prince". Known to contemporaries as "Lackland" due to his, well, lack of land, John eventually became Earl of Gloucester through marriage. His brother, Richard, generously conferred various lands on his younger sibling during his reign including the County of Mortain in northern France. Thus, it was as Count of Mortain that John was known until he succeeded to the throne of England when he became King.Tavern Trivia: One chronicler of John's reign accused the King, when laying siege to a castle, of burning pigs to torture the starving inhabitants with the smell of bacon fat.
