Carry On's Top Ten films

With over 31 Carry On films to choose from, sifting the best from the rest is no easy task. Luckily, we've done it for you. Here are the ten most outrageous outings from the bawdy British institution...

10: Carry on Sergeant

Made in 1958, the first ever Carry On remains a joyous piece of British tomfoolery, though its rather gentle content has little in common with the crazed adventures to come.

9: Carry on Constable

A classic Carry On, and the first to feature Sid James. The 1960 film also brought out the Method actor in Kenneth Williams, who took to wearing his police uniform outside the studio and even tried his hand at directing traffic in between filming.

8: Carry on Cowboy

A bit of a departure for the gang, this 1965 Wild West epic may not quite rank alongside True Grit, but who needs John Wayne when you've got Sid James in a cowboy hat?

7: Carry On Dick

This 1974 Carry On was a rather poignant outing, being the last to star either Sid or Babs Windsor. Still, one shouldn't mope when characters like Sergeant Jock Strapp and the Reverend Flasher are around.

6: Carry on Abroad

Package holidays were always going to be ideal Carry On fodder, and – with its focus on a resort called Elsbels – this 1972 romp doesn't disappoint. It's also the last film to include the gang in its entirety.

5: At Your Convenience

Taking trade unions as its subject made 1971's Carry on At Your Convenience a controversial film in its day. Starring Kenneth Williams as lavatory manufacturer WC Boggs, this is toilet humour at its finest. Ho ho!

4: Carry on Screaming

One great British film series spoofed another in 1966, when the team turned their attention to Hammer horror. Harry H Corbett of Steptoe and Son made his only Carry On appearance as the dopey Detective Bung.

3: Carry on Doctor

Made in 1967, this wasn't the first of the medical Carry Ons - but it's definitely the best. And it's no surprise there were so many set in hospital. The beds, the uniforms, the full body check-ups. Ohh Matron!!!

2: Carry on Cleo

The team's cheeky use of the set for the Elizabeth Taylor epic Cleopatra made this 1964 Carry On the most lavish one ever filmed. It also includes the gang's most famous line: "Infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me!"

1: Carry on Camping

Nudist camps. A finishing school for girls. Sid James. With such a reprehensible mixture as this, is it any wonder that 1969's Camping remains the best Carry On?
