Ten Biggest Film Flops

Sometimes it's because the budget soars beyond belief. Other times, it's because the director turns into a raving megalomaniac. And sometimes it's just because the film stinks.

But the fact is that film studios do get it badly wrong sometimes, and end up with a big fat glistening turkey. Read on for the top ten significant failures.

10: Howard the Duck (1986)

10: Howard the Duck (1986)

A family film about a superhero duck, which features a virtual sex scene between a human woman and the aforementioned animal. And yet somehow the audiences didn't flock to it, What a shocker.

Telling the moving story of a cigar-chomping alien duck who is sucked to our world to battle the, uh, 'Dark Overlord of the Universe', this slab of 80s cheese was George Lucas' attempt to get himself out of debt.

Mr Star Wars had plunged into the red after building his extravagant Skywalker Ranch, and counted on Howard the Duck to make him rich again. Instead, the film bombed and he was forced to sell Lucasfilm's CGI division – which later became Pixar. So, in a way, we have Howard the Duck to thank for Toy Story..
9: Hudson Hawk (1991)

9: Hudson Hawk (1991)

Sinister conspiracies, a code hidden in the works of Leonardo Da Vinci, and a hero stumbling into something much more complex than he initially thinks. No, it's not The Da Vinci Code – it's the ever-so-slightly less successful Hudson Hawk.

This Bruce Willis vehicle bellyflopped at the box office and was even awarded Razzies (the anti-Oscars) for Worst Director and Worst Picture.

Bruce Willis is the wise-cracking burglar on the trail of an ancient machine that can turn lead into gold while Richard E. Grant as a grinning villain. Worst line: "If Da Vinci was alive today, he'd be eating microwave sushi, naked, in the back of a Cadillac with the both of us."
8: The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002)

8: The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002)

"Somewhere between Earth and Uranus, you'll find Pluto Nash". At least the marketing bods had fun with this Eddy Murphy sci-fi comedy – unlike the critics (who panned it) and the majority of film goers.

One of the biggest box office failures in history, it stars Murphy as the owner of a nightclub on the moon. The warning signs were there from the start: the script had been endlessly re-written since the early 80s, resulting in a chaotic mish-mash of a film that even Murphy didn't like very much (it's never a good thing when your leading man refuses to promote your movie).
