Absolutely Fabulous
Ab Fabs most outrageous outing

Ab Fab's most outrageous outing

Armed with fags, wine and designer handbags, Eddy and Patsy took the world by storm when they exploded onto our screens back in 1992. Sweetie! Darling! We say (absolutely) that the most fabulous episode of Ab Fab is...

Hospital

Hospital

The very first episode of series two has Patsy at her most "crazed, morally corrupt and drunken" (to quote Edina), when it’s revealed she’s been having an affair with a politician. This leads to a sex scandal, but – far worse than that – her true age (47) is revealed to the world. She claims she’s 39, to which Saffy dryly replies "And I’m an ovum."

We also see Eddy at her most self-centred and ridiculous when she insists on surgery after stubbing her toe. Although she is appalled at the prospect of local anaesthetic ("What is this, Eastern Europe?").
Why is it our favourite?

Why is it our favourite?

This is the episode that gave us the wonderfully (and disturbingly) graphic one-liner "If the models get any younger they’ll be chucking foetuses down the catwalk", and it also nabbed an International Emmy Award, helping Ab Fab become a worldwide success.

It also boasts an absolutely unforgettable dream sequence in which a curious cross-section of famous people take the place of some of the usual stars. This bizarro world segment has Helena Bonham-Carter as Saffy (uncanny casting), feminist icon Germaine Greer as Mother and, oddest of all, Mandy Rice-Davies as Patsy.

This is the quintessential Ab Fab episode: all the characters are on top form, the absurd situations pile on top of each other, and the surreal wit is in full flow. It’s worth raising a glass of Stoli to.

  • Special mention has to be made of the wonderful first episode of series four, Parralox, in which Eddy decides to become a TV producer as well as an agent (because "one job is so last millennium") and ends up on Richard and Judy with fashion icon Twiggy.

  • There’s also Gay, the bluntly titled special in which the diabolical duo take on Manhattan, where Eddy’s long-lost son Serge is living. By special request (as they were both fans of the series), Debbie Harry and Whoopi Goldberg made appearances in this episode, which also sees Eddy explain why she doesn’t like reading. Well, books give her itchy eyes, darling.
