The Good Life

The Good Life

Returns in July

Imagine saying goodbye to the strain and tedium of everyday office life. Imagine bidding adieu to the daily commute and imagine, just imagine, getting rid of the boss and being completely and utterly in charge of your own life. Well, that's what Tom Good decides to do when he gives up the rat race and become self-sufficient.

Cast of gold
Sitcom stalwart Richard Briers plays the earnest, over-excitable and likeable Tom. His performance is perfectly matched by Felicity Kendall as Barbara. She also garnered a lot of admirers because of her wonderful bottom and was voted Rear of the Year in 1981! Equally pitch perfect are Paul Eddington and Penelope Keith as Jerry and Margot Leadbetter, the next-door neighbours.

Firm favourite
Paul Eddington, who died on 4 November 1995, was also famous for his role in Yes Minister. Both Richard Briers and Felicity Kendall have gathered much praise for their dramatic theatre work, while Penelope Keith also starred in To the Manor Born and has since become High Sheriff of Surrey. Despite all else they have achieved, the four leading players will be forever associated with The Good Life.

"Well, thanks very much, Margot!"
Unlike her nouveau-rustic neighbours, one of the things you could never imagine Margot Leadbetter doing is cooking a meal. Judging by the talents of her real life alter ego, it is probably just as well. It was always customary to have a 'do' after finishing a run of the show, and on one occasion Penelope Keith made chilli for everybody. Late that night everybody made a mad dash to the loo. Later Penelope realised one must soak the beans for a day to remove the arsenic (!)
