Smack The Pony
Thursdays at 11pm
Before Smack The Pony, comedy sketch shows were pretty much the domain of male comedians. Yes, The Fast Show and Dead Ringers featured female comedy actresses, but Smack The Pony was something different – a comedy sketch show made up of an entirely female core cast and written by women.
And what a cast. Sally Phillips (previously seen on I’m Alan Partridge), Doon Mackichan (The Day Today), Fiona Allen and Sarah Alexander all featured in the show’s now trademark surrealist situations that often revolved around unsuccessful relationships, competition in the workplace and latent lesbianism.
Unlike other comedy sketch shows, Smack The Pony didn’t rely on catchphrases for its humour – just fresh, smart, stylish and funny comedy.
