Making a Barbecue
One of the great pleasures in life is cooking and eating outside on a warm evening. If you are really into this you probably already have a portable barbecue. So why build one? Simply because it will always be there ready for use on the spur of a moment when the weather is suitable.
With a little careful planning you can incorporate your barbecue into a structure also forming a raised bed and seating area to make a real focal point in your garden.
Time to complete job: Half a day.
Approximate budget: £60.
You will need:
- Charcoal tray with lipped front to retain charcoal
- Grill
- Bricks or other building blocks (no. of bricks approximately 130)
- Mortar
- Bricklaying tools
When deciding where to put your barbecue consider the following:
- It should be unobtrusive when not in use.
- It should not be overhung by trees or other inflammable objects.
- The foundation and surrounding area should be sturdy and fireproof.
- The situation should be safe in relation to walkways/the house/and children's playing areas.
- There should be easy access from the kitchen to bring out food.
- The materials used in construction should preferably match the house and patio.
- The direction of the prevailing wind - choose a sheltered spot but not where cooking smells will annoy the neighbours.
Tip: If you are unsure whether you will get enough use out of your barbecue, build the structure on a temporary basis, just overlapping the bricks without using cement and try for a year.

Step 1: Building the base
Lay your charcoal tray on the ground in your chosen position.Mark the position for an inverted U shape of bricks around the edge of the tray, facing where you will stand with the back of the barbecue towards the prevailing wind. The tray should fit inside with about 12mm (0.5in) gap all around.

- Making a Barbecue
I agree, you just have to look at the picture. Some of the BBQs on the market are so stylish you wouldn't mind leaving them out on view but this is a monstrosity.
