My Favourite Garden
Cathy Tyson (Ham House)

Cathy Tyson (Ham House)

Located next to the River Thames near Richmond in South West London, Ham House is a place that holds many happy memories for Cathy Tyson. She reminisces "...we could just run about and play in this place... it was my playground". She still frequents the gardens with her family and looks upon it as "my paradise here... just uncluttered nature".

Ham's 22 acre gardens surround the house as a series of compartments. The formal design, characterised by geometric shapes and structured planting typifies 17th century garden design. Among the highlights are the beautiful Cherry Garden; the south terrace border with clipped yew cones, hibiscus and pomegranate trees; a maze-like wilderness and a 17th-century Orangery. "Ham House for me is a complete relaxation experience... it's getting out of my head and into the fresh air, nature and unwinding"

Cathy's favourite spot

Cathy likes escaping to the Wilderness garden at the rear of Ham House. It features formal maze-like planting of hornbeam hedges which conceal four circular summerhouses.
