Charles Kennedy (Inverewe Garden)
Located in Charles Kennedy's home constituency in Scotland, Inverewe Garden is the vision of a driven man. Osgood Mackenzie's plan to create a garden from windswept moorland on a rocky peninsula may have seemed ill-advised at the time but since the early 1900s his garden has boasted one of the finest collections of exotic species in the country. Charles Kennedy refers to Inverewe as a 'national treasure' and says the determination, insight and skill of Mackenzie is 'inspirational'.
The gardens are built on top of a sandstone cliff and are laid out as a series of tiers overlooking Loch Ewe on Scotland's rugged north west coast. The warm currents of the North Atlantic Drift provide the perfect climate for exotic species such as the Tasmanian climbing plant (Billardia Longiflora), and the South American glory flower (Eccromocarpus Scaber). The tallest Australian Gum trees in Britain can be found right here and nowhere else in the UK will you find Chinese Rhodendrons or South African Blue Nile Lillies.
Charles's favourite spot
Charles loves the solitude and calm of the garden in front of the main house. It provides him with a quiet place to pause for thought, far from the pressures of politics.Top tips from this episode
Inverewe's soil type is particularly suited to rhododendrons which thrive in the shallow-rooted ground the terrain offers. Our Programmes
