Germaine Greer (Kiftsgate Court)
Located near Chipping Campden in the heart of the Cotswolds lies Kiftsgate Court, one of the first gardens ever visited by Germaine Greer. It is this garden that has inspired her more than any other in her 30 year love of gardening. "The thing about Kiftsgate that makes it a wonderful garden to be in is that it's full of surprises...".
Kiftsgate Court is the creation of three generations of women gardeners. Started by Heather Muir in the 1920s, continued by Diany Binny from 1950 and now looked after by Anne Chambers, Kiftsgate is a series of interconnecting gardens each with its distinct character and secrets. The upper gardens surrounding the late Victorian manor house are planted to give harmonious colour schemes, whilst the sheltered lower gardens provide a home for plants from warmer climes and recreate the atmosphere of the Mediterranean. "It's exuberant but shy at the same time... This is a place where you can be totally sensualist, savage, inventive... everything's frothing, foaming and spurting all over the place. I love all that. It's just perfect."
Germaine's favourite spot
The White Sunk Garden is a formal garden featuring a fountain and some beautiful planting including hydrangea specimens (the north border conditions suit them well) and the Rosa sericea 'Heather Muir', whose single white blooms grow to twelve feet high. "It's the orchestration of textures and the subtlety of it" which appeal most of all to Germaine.Top tips from this episode
The large hydrangea that creeps up the front of the house has been there for many years. It likes a moist environment and regular deadheading to ensure a good display of flowers the next time round. Our Programmes
