The Faces of Gardeners' World

A retrospective look at some of the much-loved presenters who have taken the Gardeners' World series from seed to full-grown bloom.

Though it had its first episode way back in 1968, the Gardeners' World series has grown and blossomed over the years, almost like a garden in itself. Not only has the show's look and feel evolved with advancing filming techniques and technology, its varied collection of presenters from Percy Thrower to current triumvirate of Monty Don, Chris Beardshaw and Rachel De Thame, have kept it feeling fresh. We take a look back over the years, and remember some of our favourites...

Percy Thrower presented The Gardening Club, the first gardening series ever produced by the BBC which established him as a celebrity. He also presented Gardeners' World from 1969 to 1976 and changed the way people perceived gardening and their gardens, turning it from a weekend chore into a leisure activity. The show was shot in the garden of Percy's four-bedroom bungalow in Shropshire - The Magnolias. In 1976, Thrower broke the BBC's strict "no advertising" policy and was fired for endorsing fertilisers on a rival TV channel.

As the presenter of Gardeners' World for 17 years and the creator of numerous other gardening series, Hamilton's down-to-earth approach and a gentle humour were the keys to his success. He was a prolific journalist and writer and many of his books have become gardening classics. Since his death in 1996, his Barnsdale Gardens in Rutland have become his gift to the nation. The backdrop to his weekly Gardeners' World shows, his family opened the gardens to the public so that everyone can enjoy Geoff's unique designs and his nursery of rare and unusual plants.
