Planting a Tree Video

A tree will add structure to your garden, while encouraging birds and insects to visit. If you plant a fruit tree, you'll also be able to enjoy a harvest once it's established. You'll also be able to sit back and relax in its shade as it gets bigger. Just remember to give it lots of hugs to get it growing!

Time to complete the job: 1 hour

Step 1: Dig!

Start by digging a hole about twice the size of your tree's root ball.
Mix organic compost with the soil from the hole. A 50/50 mix is good.
Put two or three inches of the soil/compost mix back into the hole.
Step 2: Add a stake

Step 2: Add a stake

Trees need a little support in the early years of their lives, so you'll need to tie it to a stake.
Drive the stake into the hole slightly off-centre.
Tip: Always put the stake in before you plant the tree, or you'll damage the roots.
