Laying Decking Video

A functional outdoor room really requires a sophisticated deck to tie it all together. So, when mere paving stones will not do, call in the experts to lay a perfect professional base. Once they've done the difficult bits, get out your hammer (or nail gun) and get ready to make that deck your own by putting on the finishing touches.

Time to complete the job: A few hours

You will need:

  • Spirit level
  • Tape measure
  • Spacer (or pencil)
  • Claw hammer
  • Nail gun
  • Combination square
  • Chisel
  • 3in nails
  • Handsaw
Step 1: Where to start

Step 1: Where to start

Once you've had a pro lay the base for your deck, it's easy to lay the decking.
Start with the first board on an outside corner, away from your house and any buildings.
For a professional finish allow the boards to overhang the end and side beams of the frame by about 18mm.
Step 2: Place the first row

Step 2: Place the first row

Affix each board using two nails at each joist, along the end beam of the deck. Make sure to keep the 18mm overhang consistent.
When you reach the side beam, use the set square and a pencil to mark the end board for cutting.
Use a handsaw to cut the board straight along your mark.
Tip: Keep the boards as long as possible for the best finish.
