Decorating a Plant Pot Video

If you enjoy cooking, you'll know how important it is to have an assortment of fresh herbs to hand in your kitchen. Why not work this into your kitchen scheme by following this crafty step-by-step guide.

Time to complete the job: 3 hours plus overnight drying
Approximate budget: £15

You will need:

  • An unglazed terracotta pot and tray
  • PVA glue
  • Brushes
  • Two colours of emulsion paint to match your kitchen
  • An array of culinary herbs
  • Felt feet
  • Pistachio shells
  • A felt tip pen
  • Spray varnish
This was just one of the step-by-step guides that the Our Home team talked us through as they transformed the Our Home Kitchen. For more about the show, find out All About Our Home.

Step 1: Seal the pot

Paint your terracotta pot with a coat of PVA glue to seal it. Cover the whole outside of the pot and both sides of the tray. This will help you to apply the finish and will stop moisture from coming through the wrong side of the terracotta. Leave to dry.

Step 2: Paint the pot

Paint the bottom portion of the pot in a colour that co-ordinates with your kitchen colour scheme. Next, pain the rim in a contrasting colour. The Our Home team went for a classic black and white combination.

Step 3: Decorate the rim

Collect some pistachio nut shells and attach them to the rim of the plant pot in rows with PVA glue. Leave to dry overnight. Tip: Don't worry if you the PVA glue drips on to your paintwork. It will become transparent as soon as it is dry.
