Traditional Garden
If you watch a lot of garden makeover programmes, you'd be forgiven for thinking that traditional gardens are out of style. Instant gardens don't lend themselves to a perfect lawn, flower beds filled with mixed herbaceous perennials, shrubs and roses, summer houses and mature fruit trees. But in reality, this is the kind of garden that many people have, and more people aspire to.
There is something marvellously comforting about a garden that looks as if it belongs in the British landscape, whether it's behind a cosy cottage, a town terrace or in a more rural setting.
For more information see Creating a Lawn From Seed and Creating a Lawn From Turf.
If you're starting from scratch, it's easy enough to achieve an instant lawn with turf. You simply buy by the metre - look under 'turf' in your Yellow Pages. Alternatively, buy online from Teal Turf or by freephone on (0500) 646462 - they supply all over the country.
There are several different grades of lawn (rather like carpet), ranging from utility grade (£2 per square metre/yard + delivery) to bowling green (£4 per square metre/yard + delivery). It's important to think carefully about how much wear your lawn is going to get - think twice about going for the bowling green if you have three kids and a dog!
