Five of the Best Blossom Trees

These spring flowering trees will bring an avalanche of blossom to your garden. Read our reviews and choose the best one for your garden situation.

Walk down any country lane at the moment and you'll trip over beautiful hedgerow trees or orchards covered in rich white, red or pink blooms. If you fancy bringing a similar avalanche of colour to your garden, there's a great selection of trees to choose from that will fit perfectly into any outdoor space.

Remember, you don't need to plant large trees where small ones will do better. In fact small specimens will normally catch up and overtake trees planted as large specimens within a decade or so. But young trees need to move in the wind to build strong stems and promote root extensions so if they do need a little support, loosely tie them to a cane, still allowing some wind movement. And don't allow grass or weeds to grow around the base of the tree for at least two to three years after planting as these plants can restrict tree root growth.

And even if your garden is simply too small to hold a tree of any size, you don't have to miss out on their beautiful blossoms. Why not choose a bonsai crab apple, for example, which would look perfect on a windowsill or patio?
Japanese Flowering Cherry 'Prunus Amanogawa'- £19.95 (10-litre pot)

Japanese Flowering Cherry 'Prunus Amanogawa'- £19.95 (10-litre pot)

Great for: A dash of pink in a small garden.
The Japanese flowering cherry produces bronze leaves in spring, which turn rich green in summer and then fiery shades in autumn. But most striking are the dense clusters of large, fragrant, pale pink blooms that smother the branches in late spring. This cherry is one of the best ornamental trees for a small garden. It can tolerate full sun or partial shade, and is fine with most soils. Should reach an eventual height of about 8 metres with a spread or about 4 metres.

Crab apple - prices start at around £5

Crab apple - prices start at around £5

Great for: All sizes of garden.
Crab apples provide interest in the garden all year round: in spring they are covered in clouds of blossom and in autumn they are covered in waxy fruits which can last into the new year. A young tree will establish quickly and most soils are suitable, even chalk, but a deep, fertile loam that doesn't dry out too much in summer is ideal. The compact nature of crab apple trees makes them ideal for small gardens and they can even be grown in a pot.
