Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus)

Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus)

The viburnum genus of plants is a very large and versatile one, which incidentally has nothing at all to do with roses. This one is a great-looking shrub ideal for the autumn since it has large clusters of red berries.
Price: Expect to pay about £5 for a small plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Deciduous Perennial
  • Height: 3m(10ft)
  • Spread: 1.8m(6ft)
  • Situation: Shady corner or bank
  • Soil Type: Medium rich
Viburnums are one of the best species to have as shrubs in the garden. They are quick growers, grow relatively tall and do well as screens. This one needs to be planted with other shrubs since it is deciduous, but the amount of foliage produced during the spring and summer makes a good screen.

From the cultivars available you can choose the colour of the autumn berries, from honey yellow to orange. This is a species to grow if you want to encourage birds, and if you want a wildflower garden. The prolific white flowers are attractive to insects.

Looking Good:
Look out for the amazing diversity of viburnums in the Hillier Gardens in Hampshire during the autumn.

Best With:
Best with an Orange Peel clematis growing through its midst.
