The Knowledge

  • Height: 17.73cm(7in)
  • Spread: 15.24cm(6in)
  • Situation: Sunny border

Growing bulbs is great fun. They can be bought in supermarkets and DIY shops and bought mail-order from specialist bulb importers. Prices range a lot. With a good quantity of bulb compost they can be arranged in various pots and containers and window-boxes for maximum effect. Keeping the compost moist and watching the new shoots emerge is very satisfactory.

After everything has died down following flowering, the bulbs can be lifted, tidied up, and recycled for next year. Keep them out of frost and damp conditions otherwise you will lose them. Collect any small bulbs that have grown on the original bulb and plant them up in the next season.
