Wake Robin (Trillium simile)

Wake Robin (Trillium simile)

Any light woodland can be brightened up by adding Wake Robins. They are mostly native to the forests of North America, so when grown in a shady part of an English garden they lose none of their bright colours.
Price: Expect to pay about £1.50-£4 for a rhizome.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Deciduous perennial
  • Height: 17.77cm(7in)
  • Spread 15.24cm(6in)
  • Situation: Shady woodland
  • Soil Type: Poor to medium
The three bold petals are what give this plant its Trinity Flower common name. Behind the white petals there are green bracts too. Whilst most species and cultivars have white flowers, there are others that have mauve, yellow or maroon flowers.

Trillium can be a little expensive, so it might suit to buy in some seed and grow them from seed, but the only catch is that the plant can take up to seven years to flower. The white punctuations of wake robins in the woods is however proof that this North American plant can thrive in the wild. It grows particularly well underneath an avenue of nut trees or Hazel (Corylus avellanus).
