Black-Eyed Susan (Thunbergia alata)

Black-Eyed Susan (Thunbergia alata)

Named after its dark centre, this is a superbly good-looking climber that is just right for the conservatory or the garden. The intensity of the orange is great and it is the kind of plant that is not too puny or too rampant.
Price: Expect to pay around £2 for a plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Annual
  • Height: 140cm(55in)
  • Spread: 63.5cm(25in)
  • Situation: Pot or border in the sun
If you can get your hands on any Thunbergia they are all worthwhile and are excellent garden plants, from blue, orange, white, yellow and orange. Some are sub-tropical and can be grown in conservatories. This one does well both inside and out in the summer.

Make a pyramid or tripod and grow them in a pot or container or amongst the runner beans in the kitchen garden. The bright orange flowers make this a species that will become a focus of attention. It comes originally from Africa so it likes it hot. Grow it from seed, or buy a plant.
