Perennials
Feverfew (Tanacetum pathenium)

Feverfew (Tanacetum pathenium)

For a plant that has been grown in gardens historically for its medicinal usage, fortunately it also happens to be a good-looking plant. It grows as a perennial and can spring up anywhere since it is profligate with its seeds.
Price: Grow from seeds or expect to pay about 80p per plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial
  • Height: 45.72cm(18in)
  • Spread: 27.94cm(11in)
  • Situation: Shady to sunny border
  • Soil Type: Poor to Medium rich
If you plant this species you will never ever be without it, for it will pop up everywhere in the garden. This can be very useful if you like an unstructured wild kind of garden. The bright flowers are visited by insects and the whole plant produces a strong scent.

It is the ingredients of the plant that have been used medicinally, for instance against migraine, but it is also good to pinch it as you go past for the lasting smell it leaves on your fingers. Grow it from seed, or buy a potted plant. There are several cultivars and, like the one in the picture, ones with yellow-lemon leaves.

Looking Good:
Look out for it in Yorkshire during the summer, especially in the wild in Gledhow Valley Woods.

Best With:
Best grown along the edge of a border or near a gate.
