Kaffir Lily (Schizostylis coccinea 'Major')

Kaffir Lily (Schizostylis coccinea 'Major')

It is great fun growing schizostylis since they are such good lookers. Their bright colours are very useful at the end of the season when a lot of other species flag. As perennials they grow in relatively tight groups and are equally effective in conservatories and greenhouses.
Price: Expect to pay about £1.50 each for the rhizome.

Kaffir lilies come from the wetlands of South Africa and grow by means of underground rhizomes. Their startling colours are very typical of South African species and these visual pleasures are easily replicated in gardens. They flower in late summer and well into autumn, in fact there is one called 'November Cheer' which keeps going into really bad weather. They even beat nerines into flowering very late.

Kaffir liles can be increased simply by lifting the rhizomes in winter and dividing them. They look excellent in clumps, their bright colours stealing the show and making a focal point in the garden.

Looking Good:
