Scaevolas are for the hot summer weather since they grow hard and fast and look fabulous in hanging baskets. It is only recently that they have become popular and widespread in garden centres, and their colours range from pink to deep violet.

Scaevolas took the world of Hanging Baskets by storm a few years ago. There are about 100 species of scaevola that come coastal vegetation right through to alpine habitats in Australia and Polynesia. The coastal ones are ideal for drought-tolerant gardens - or Hanging Baskets - since they like it hot and infrequently watered. You can image how hot it can be at the back of a beach on a hot sunny day.

In the hanging basket scaevolas excel themselves and will often produce long stems, showing off their fascinating flowers. They get their name of Fairy Fan Flower from the way the flower fans out. You can imagine this for their life on hot dunes and sandy habitats.

Check out the Hanging Baskets down any high street in southern England in summer and you are likely to see the violet hues of scaevola in full display.

Best With:
Grow with trailing lobelia, small salvias and petunias.
