Cotton Lavender (Santolina)

Cotton Lavender (Santolina)

Santolinas look at their best during the summer months when they are covered by lots of tiny yellow flowers, some like pom-poms. Throughout the rest of the year their grey foliage features make for good hedgerows and thickets which often have a touch of aromatic scents.
Price: Expect to pay about £4 for a plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial
  • Height: 66cm(26in)
  • Spread: 101.60cm(40in)
  • Situation: Shady to sunny spot
  • Soil Type: Medium to rich
Medium to large-sized gardens accommodate santolinas - or cotton lavenders - well as they will grow large. They can get old and tired and then can be replaced with something new. They are frost hardy and very woody and make good clumps in gardens, their flowers being very attractive to insects.

Ideal for dry, windy and sunny gardens santolinas come from the Mediterranean littoral and have some drought-resistant qualities suitable for many gardens today. So there is no need to grow them in nutrient-rich soil or especially water them since they are quite used to hot, dry conditions.

Looking Good:
Look out for cotton lavenders in most herbaceous borders in July.

Best With:
Best grown with a clematis such as C. integrifolia growing through it.
