Picture Perfect Planters

Picture Perfect Planters

With the careful choice of colours and in the right setting, a simple flowerpot loaded with blooms or an architectural shrub can do wonders for a garden.

These days designers are thinking up all kinds of new ways to liven up your garden or show off your plants. In particular you can choose from a massive variety of pots and planters, individualized not only through the creative use of colour and materials but with a sophisticated use of texture too. One of the leading proponents of planter design is Mark de la Torre.

Based in the west of England, Mark specialises in planters and containers characterized by elegant curves and strong texture. Some of his earliest designs were ceramic but he has expanded his range to include a selection of polished aluminium, galvanized steel, knobbly cast iron and fabulously shiny stainless steel planters. Sizes vary depending on material but most of his designs are around 50 centimetres across.

Planters made from cast iron or aluminium have central drain holes but these can be capped, allowing the pots to be turned into stylish fountains. Mark sells direct, but if you want to have a look at his range, he'll have a stand at the Chelsea Flower show, slap bang in the middle of Monument Way.

Typical prices: £435 (mild steel), £680 (polished stainless steel), £3000 (polished aluminium).
