Rudbeckia (Rudbeckia Green Eyes)

Rudbeckia (Rudbeckia 'Green Eyes')

Rudbeckias or coneflowers are hugely popular in the herbaceous border as colourful perennials. They look good because they are medium-sized, make a generous stands when mature and have interesting flowers. Of the many varieties, this is a particular popular one with a green 'cone' or eye in the centre.
Price: Expect to pay about £1.50 - £4.00 for a starter plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial
  • Height: 56cm(22in)
  • Spread: 68.58cm (27in)
  • Situation: Sunny border
  • Soil Type: Medium to rich
All rudbeckias are generally called Black-eyed Susans because the central cone is normally black, but it is not in this case. Also known as 'Irish Eyes', 'Green Eyes' makes a subtle treat from the regular R. fulgida, since it is a variety of R. hirta.

Coneflowers make important colour statements in borders and can be relied upon to bulk up a formal herbaceous border. They range from fairly delicate short-stemmed varieties up to leggy tall ones, but they can all be relied upon for their rich deep yellow and orange colours. They can be increased simply by dividing the root in winter.
